About Us

The Center for Information Technology and Dispute Resolution (CITDR) was established in September, 1997 with support from the Hewlett Foundation and the Department of Legal Studies at the University of Massachusetts. From 1995-1997, under a grant from the National Center for Automated Information Research, the Department sponsored the Online Ombuds Office, one of the first efforts in online dispute resolution (ODR).

The Center exists to support and sustain the development of information technology applications, institutional resources, and theoretical and applied knowledge for better understanding and managing conflict.  The Center is directed by Professors Ethan Katsh and Janet Rifkin of the Legal Studies department at the University of Massachusetts.  Alan Gaitenby, an adjunct professor in Legal Studies, is the assistant director for CITDR.
